Re:Soundings hosts the DownTown Ensemble, featuring three works by New York composers Harley Gaber, Tom Hamilton, and Karl Korte.

Harley Gaber returns to New York after a thirty year absence, for the World Premiere of his latest film work, Webern's gambit: an introduction to..... This film also marks Gaber's return to concert music in the form of a live cello accompaniment (performed by cellist, composer, and filmmaker, Alex Waterman) that weaves in and out of the film's soundtrack. Gaber's last major NYC performance of his now clut classic, The Winds Rise in the North, conducted by Pierre Boulez as part of his "Prospective Encounters" series was in 1977. Gaber's piece was recently re-mastered and re-issued by Edition RZ in Berlin. Much of Gaber's film work addresses various aspects of German Culture, a long-standing interest of his, and typified by his 5,000 canvas work, DIE PLAGE, which was completed in 2002 after nine years of work.

Tom Hamilton has been composing and performing for over forty years. Hamilton often explores the interaction of simultaneous layers of activity, prompting "present-time listening" on the part of performer and listener. His CD London Fix received honorary mention in the 2004 Prix Ars Electoronica. Grammophone Magazine has said of his music "...bubble[s] with energy, a veritable counterpoint of indeterminacy." His piece Formal & Informal Music started out life in 1980 with a commission from the St. Louis Museum for a sound installation, which became an "aural score" for improvising soloists, and was subsequently produced in a shorter concert presentation.

The music of Karl Korte has a scope and a variety that makes classification of it difficult. Recently a Visiting Professor of Music at Williams College, Korte now lives in Cambridge, NY and is celebrating his 80th birthday. He has won two Guggenheim Fellowships. In addition to his acoustic compositions, Korte has written many works using electronic media. In the mid 80's with the availability of digital recording and processing, he wrote a number of works, ioncluding Birds of Aotearoa.

Admission is by donation. A reception for the artists will follow the concert.

Group info

The DownTown Ensemble was founded in 1983 by its co-directors, Daniel Goode and William Hellermann, as a response to a perceived need for repertoire customarily under-represented in today's new music world. “This intrepid group of conceptualists cuts no aesthetic corners.” (The Village Voice) Although originally formed in New York City, the group is now based in Columbiaville, Columbia County, where Mr. Hellermann lives. The Ensemble has made its reputation performing a number of different types of experimental music, such as: traditionally notated and graphic music scores, sound/text music, ritual/intermedia pieces, performance art and Fluxus, improvisation in a number of traditions; large ensemble, scores for variable (unspecified) instrumentation, and interactive computer music. The group regularly features composers performing and directing their music often written expressly for the Ensemble. There have been over one hundred and forty such collaborations since the group’s inception.
